Gender inequalities in the labor market in Portugal: a brief statistical overview
CoLABOR joins in the celebration of International Women's Day, established by the United Nations in 1975, with the launch of the publication "Gender inequalities in the labor market in Portugal: a brief statistical overview."
Starting from an overview of the main national and European policies promoting equality, the authors examine structural trends in female participation in employment and conclude that, although Portugal has seen a significant increase in women's qualifications and a high rate of female participation in the labor market in recent decades, close to parity in terms of employment volume, significant inequalities in job quality continue to persist.
These gender inequalities are reflected in higher levels of underemployment and overqualification, underrepresentation in top positions, and significant pay gaps.
Despite the progress achieved, gender inequalities remain structural and systemic in nature, reflecting broader social asymmetries. The authors consider that strengthening and deepening public policies is essential to consolidate substantive equality in work and employment in Portugal.
