Policy brief on the impacts of the green transition on employment is now available

The policy brief for the project ClimateQualityproject, titled The Impacts of the Green Transition on Employment: An Analysis Based on ‘Brown Jobs’, developed as part of the Science4Policy (S4P) call for proposals. The document analyzes the effects of the climate transition on the labor market and presents scientific evidence and recommendations for public policymakers.

The policy brief was authored by the CoLABOR research team—Frederico Cantante (project coordinator), Pedro Estevão, Franco Tomassoni, Sara Nunes, and Tânia Almeida—as well as Ricardo Moreira, a researcher at the Institute of Social Sciences at the University of Lisbon, and researcher Vera Ferreira.

This paper is part of the first set of policy briefs now available through the Science4Policy (S4P) call for proposals, an initiative promoted by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT) in partnership with PLANAPP – Center for Public Policy Planning and Evaluation.

According to the FCT news, this initiative is part of the “Science for Public Policy” portfolio and aims to strengthen the use of scientific evidence in the formulation, implementation, and evaluation of public policies in Portugal.

The policy briefs now released are the result of projects funded through the 2023 and 2024 rounds of the call for proposals, involving research teams from higher education institutions and research centers. These documents synthesize relevant scientific evidence and present recommendations aimed at public decision-makers in areas such as the environment, the economy, innovation, health, poverty, and territorial cohesion.

The initiative aims to bridge the gap between science and policy-making, contributing to more informed, effective, and results-oriented public policies. This effort is also part of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR), strengthening the institutional capacity of the public administration and promoting a culture of evidence-based decision-making.

All of the policy briefs will be made available gradually over the coming weeks, including the results of the 2025 edition of the competition, which is currently underway.
