CoLABOR Researcher Analyzes the Challenges of AI in the Portuguese Economy
CoLABOR researcher João Vasco Lopes is the author of the chapter on the economy in the latest edition of the IPPS-Iscte publication— The State of the Nation and Public Policies 2026—which is part of the series “Governing with a Fragmented Parliament.”
In this chapter, the researcher analyzes the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) by companies, noting that Portugal continues to lag behind the European Union average, a reflection of the characteristics of the business sector and the specialization profile of the Portuguese economy.
The chapter also reflects on the National Artificial Intelligence Agenda (ANIA), acknowledging its strengths but highlighting challenges that could limit its effectiveness in the country’s economic and social transformation.
Published annually by IPPS-Iscte since 2019, the report *The State of the Nation and Public Policy* brings together contributions from experts in various fields on the main challenges facing public policy in Portugal, promoting a multidisciplinary analysis of issues central to the country’s development.
