CoLABOR contributes to the latest issue of the magazine Dirigir & Formar, dedicated to the theme “Transitions, Work, Skills, and the Future,” with the article “Green Transition and Inequalities,” authored by Frederico Cantante and Pedro Estêvão

Throughout the publication, the researchers examine how climate change and green transition policies disproportionately affect different social groups and regions. The article highlights that low-income populations and families tend to be more vulnerable to the effects of climate change, have fewer resources to protect themselves, and face greater difficulties in recovering from extreme weather events.

The authors also warn of the potentially unequal effects of decarbonization policies. Measures such as higher energy prices or the transformation of emission-intensive economic sectors could disproportionately harm the most vulnerable workers and regions, particularly in sectors such as agriculture, industry, energy, and the automotive sector.

In this context, the article argues that the green transition can only succeed if it is accompanied by a just transition. This entails investing in training and reskilling the workers most affected, strengthening social protection policies, and promoting economic diversification strategies in regions most dependent on high-emission activities.

This article is based on research conducted as part of the ClimatEquality project, “The Impacts of the Green Transition on Employment: An Analysis of ‘Brown Collar’ Jobs,” carried out under the Science4Policy (S4P) call for proposals, a joint initiative of PLANAPP and FCT.
