Poverty in Portugal: trends and conjectures
To mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, October 17, CoLABOR is releasing a publication entitled "Poverty in Portugal: trends and conjectures".
As part of the Números em Análise editorial line, this publication addresses the methodological and conceptual issues surrounding the concept of poverty, as well as the trend in Portugal and the respective incidence in certain social categories and regions of the country.
It also discusses the impact of the national minimum wage (SMN) on exposure to poverty, the evolution of the impact of social transfers in Portugal in a comparative perspective, as well as the identification of two forms of deprivation, namely the low coverage rate of unemployment benefits and the growing gap between the reference value of the social insertion income and the poverty threshold and the SMN. The last point is aimed at reflecting on monetary poverty and material and social deprivation in the current inflationary context, conjecturing expected trends.
